A super marathon prep in Groningen: 1st Dutch athlete in 4 miles

October 14th 2007 - As a final tune-up for the Beijing marathon next weekend, Simon took part in the Groningen 4 mile race on Sunday. The result was as spectacular as unexpected: 8th place in 18.31 and 20 second ahead of the second Dutch athlete, European U23 vice-champion 10 km Michel Butter. The European U23 cross country champion Barnabas from Hungary was nearly a minute behind Simon.

Simon started out slowly, even behind th eleite women leaders for the first kilometer. But he found his rhythm quickly afterwards and moved to Erik Negerman, Timothy Karany, Jorrit vaan Malsen and Barnabas at the 2.5 kilometer mark. He immediately took the lead and managed to shake the group of with 2 kilometers to go. In the final stages, he passed two Kenyans collegues who had fallen off th elead group to finish in 18.31, 42 seconds faster than he ever ran.

"I have never felt this good in a road race. I could keep on going and pushing. The crowds were great all along the course and helped me through th elast tough kilometer. I hope to have an enjoyable marathon in Beijing. If circumstances (smog and heat) allow, preferably just below 2.30!", Simon added after the race.

From a Ducth website (atletiek.nl by Cors van den brink), the following impression was taken (in dutch): "Michel Butter kwam pas net uit zijn rustperiode en bleek nog niet in topvorm. ‘In de Damloop ging het nog wel redelijk, maar ik had de afgelopen dagen waarschijnlijk iets te pittig doorgetraind. Mijn benen waren te stijf. Bovendien heb ik net mijn bachelor gehaald bij de Johan Cruyff Academy’, zo moest hij constateren. ‘Al is 18.51.6 niet eens zo slecht. Ik hoef pas in vorm te zijn bij de EK cross in december.’ Na twee kilometer zag hij de rustiger gestarte Simon Vroemen voorbij komen. Het tweetal bleef nog twee kilometer samen, maar daarna bleek de steeple-loper te snel. Vroemen loopt volgende week zijn eerste marathon en doet dat in Beijing. ‘Ik heb daarvoor natuurlijk veel kilometers gemaakt en ben al twee weken aan het taperen. Dan gaat zo’n wedstrijd over zes kilometer je makkelijk af’, aldus de snelste Nederlander, die achtste werd in de eindrangschikking. Derde Nederlander was een junior: Jorit van Malsen kwam na 19.17.5 aan op de Vismarkt. "
